Poetry in the Garden

Join three inspiring Maine poets, Stephen Petroff, Lee Sharkey and our own Steve Luttrell this Friday, July 14, for a reading of their work from 5:30-7:00 in the garden behind Longfellow house, part of the Maine Historical Society in Portland, Maine.

Already missing our good friend, Jack Collum

Alas our good friend Jack Collom is no longer with us. For those of you who are not familiar with him or his work, here is an excerpt from the write-up done by the Poetry Foundation, “Collom’s poetry takes its genesis from everyday happenings, activities, and observations; his book on writing for and by children, Poetry Everywhere (1994), reflects this outlook. His poems for adults are often grounded in the details of the natural world, and he has been described as an ecological poet. Collom was active as a teacher of creative writing for adults and children since the 1970s. He has taught for Poets-in-the-Schools and as an adjunct professor at Naropa University, where he teaches ecology and literature. His awards include fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts. He died in 2017.”

Peter Manuel

Peter Manuel:  graduated from the Stonecoast M.F.A. program in January 2005; the following April his Sheltering Pines Press chapbook, (!!) exclamations (!!), was published.  In early 2008, he himself issued a “booklet” version of a nine-page, thirteen-years- in-the-making poem, Big Girls Don’t Cry: My Song of Songs. Last summer he completed an original opera libretto: which his mentor, Baron Wormser, calls an “Ode to Zaftigkeit.”  Manuel is also composing the music to this work.
