The Gathering Eve
by Krista Luttrell
Dusk wraps us in a familiar shawl
stretched across the living fields,
and the light fades
into the silence
and I heard a thousand flutters rise-
the night blowing in
soft as starlings folding to roost
over your house,
this night’s closing in.
On the edge of a day
I didn’t want to end,
your eyes glimmer, gray
into the slow blue going.
and the eve gathers
what the dawn scattered,
and holds it,
the way my memory plays your name.
I love you, see you soon.
For my father, William.
See you soon.
