Various Citrus Fruits

by Mia Aguilera

I thought it was strange your husband
did not eat fruit.

You, who handed me my first pomelo slice.
Pale pink beads of juice catching light.

You, who halved a blood orange & painted its watercolor likeness.

From you, I learned a grapefruit is first sweet, then bitter.
An orange is easily shared

I have always thought friendship
is longer lasting than romantic love.

After nine years, some parts of our lives have split
into segments that cannot be made whole.

So let us pair the acidity of lemon with the creaminess of butter.

Let us seek tender bright fruit.

Let us choose the joy of dropping heavy tangerines into the basket of our skirts.

Let us want to meet again.

Summer is the season of citrus
& we will rush into it                     mouths open.
